Canada, after all, styled itself as a peaceable kingdom, the very opposite of a warrior society. The War of 1812 is often celebrated in Ontario as a British victory for what would become Canada in 1867, but Canadian historians in recent decades look at it as a defeat for the First Nations of Canada, and also for the merchants of Montreal (who lost the fur trade of the Michigan-Minnesota area). Canada at War Against Japan, 1941–1945 Marking the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, this new online exhibition explores Canadians’ involvement in the war against Japan — including the Battle of Hong Kong, life in prisoner-of-war camps, and the forced relocation of Japanese Canadians — through key events, photographs, and eyewitness accounts. Canada has missed an opportunity to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War with efforts that fell far short of those in allied countries, several historians say.
